The Armada in Rouen : the birth of gathering
The Armada is a world festival of sailing boats that takes place on the banks of the Seine river in Rouen every five years. Jean Lecanuet, the mayor of Rouen, and Patrick Herr had an idea to organize an event and to bring together the biggest sailing ships of the world. In 2008 this meeting hosted almost 10 million visitors that came to see different sailing ships, warships, schooners and submarines from all over the world.
The Armada in Rouen : history of the world festival
The first edition of the Armada took place in 1989. It had a great success and generated such a big interest (4 million visitors came for this occasion) that Armada in Rouen became a global gathering every five years.
In 1994, second edition has been organized to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the allied landings in Normandy, and in 1999, there was a celebration of the end of the second millennium with many different activities that were implemented (concerts and fireworks).
The 2003 edition had a great resonance in the mass media: 6000 articles in the press, broadcast on 56 world channels. The last Armada took place in 2008 and continues to impress their visitors and makes them dream about adventures and long voyages.
